Before founding Tangible Group in 2002, Karen spent nearly three decades in corporate marketing at American Express and IBM, finally serving as vice president of worldwide marketing for Atlas Venture in Boston. Karen now coaches and teaches leaders at all levels — from front-line managers to the C-suite. Her client list includes ARAMARK, British Petroleum, Los Angeles Unified School District, Microsoft and affiliates of Paramount Pictures. In 2009, Mercer Consulting published the book Creating Value through People, on which Karen collaborated with her husband, author and economist Joel Kurtzman. Karen earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Rutgers University and studied marketing management at Columbia University. Karen is certified as an executive coach by the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara. She lives in Los Angeles.

Most amazing feat: For 15 years, I was a single working mom and raised my daughter completely solo. Katie graduated from Boston University, is studying at UCLA and now works as a human resources manager. She is a good citizen, a lovely human being and a great friend.

First summer job: Pretzel Girl at Wonderland amusement pier on the Jersey shore

Career in my next life: Architect and interior designer

Anticipation: Annual drive over the Ninth St. causeway into Ocean City, N.J., with the smell of salt air, the ferris wheel on the horizon, and my friends and family waiting for me.
